Vaseline in Hair

Vaseline has several different uses. While many may use it to alleviate dry, cracked skin or even for minor scrapes and abrasions, it may also offer some cosmetic benefits. For example, vaseline in hair care products has surged in recent years with many men and women attributing the improvement in the health and growth of their tresses to this product.

Does It Make Your Hair Grow?

There is no scientific evidence that points to the fact that this product makes hair grow faster. However, that is not to say that it cannot be beneficial to those who are trying to grow their hair out. This may be especially so for those who have dry or damaged hair. Contrary to popular belief, this waxy substance does not add moisture but can help seal moisture in. This can help decrease the split ends responsible for breakage and keep hair in good condition. Properly caring for dry and damaged hair by ensuring adequate moisturization is often the first step in achieving long and healthy hair.

How to Use Vaseline in Hair?

As with most things, too much of anything is not a good thing. Small amounts of vaseline in hair is all that is needed to reap the benefits. No more than a pea size amount is necessary unless length or texture requires more. Hair that is thinner or finer may require even less. It is then recommended to smooth from the root to tip. It can be left on for a few hours or even overnight. Hair should be wrapped as to avoid getting product on clothing and bedding. A basic rinse will not remove vaseline from the hair. It must be shampooed out with warm water. Some may choose to make this part of their daily or weekly hair care routine.

Are There Disadvantages of Using Vaseline in Hair?

Other than using too much, which can be difficult to remove, there are no real disadvantages. Some individuals who are prone to blemishes may experience additional breakouts if the vaseline is around the hairline or face. This can be avoided by wrapping the hair, not using excessive amounts and ensuring that the product is not in contact with that area.

What Other Reasons Might Vaseline Be Used in the Hair?

There are many different reasons it may be used in the hair. Some enjoy the luster, shine and softness that it can lend. Vaseline in hair is also used to treat common conditions such as dry scalp and dandruff as well. It can alleviate the itching, flakes and general discomfort associated with these problems. It can be used as a stand-alone remedy, included in commercially prepared hair care products or even added to a hair mask or conditioner.
