When most people think of skincare and skin tightening, they think of the latest expensive anti-aging skincare cream featured on a television commercial. However, many don’t realize that you can use oil for skin tightening purposes and see the same results.
Why are oils good for skin?
A common misconception is that oils will leave your face with a layer of oil, feeling and looking oily. If used right, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Dating back to ancient Egyptians, and possibly even earlier, people have used various kinds of oils for skin tightening and other anti-aging purposes.
Modern-day top dermatologists agree that oils might be the missing piece of the puzzle in most people’s skin care routine. The reason for this is that oils are full of essential fatty acids, polyphenols, antioxidants, and vitamins.
Not all oils are created equal
Although there are so many different kinds of oils out there that can be classified as “facial oils”, simply meaning they are great for your skin, it’s important to keep in mind that when looking for skin tightening oils, different skin types require different oils.
In addition, you need to know the distinction between essential oils and carrier oils.
Essential oils are the life force of plants. They protect the plant from predators and the elements, as well as giving the plant its characteristic aroma. They are extracted from the roots, stems, leaves, and other parts of the plant.
When looking for essential oils that tighten the skin, you have to make sure you get 100% pure essential oils, not labeled as “fragrance”, with the only ingredient being the oil.
Also, essential oils are very concentrated and powerful, so less is more and they may need to be diluted with a carrier oil before applying topically. Just a few of the best essential oils for skin tightening include:
1. Frankincense oil:
Along with being able to clear up age spots and blemishes, correct skin discoloration, prevent large pores, aging, and wrinkles, and block bacteria, Frankincense oil strengthens the skin and tightens it.
2. Neroli oil:
The natural chemical in Neroli oil, known as citral works to regenerate skin cells. This, in turn, strengthens the elasticity of the skin and decreases the size of pores. Neroli works great for those who have sensitive or oily skin.
3. Pomegranate oil:
Used in skin cancer treatments, it’s no surprise that pomegranate oil is a great skin protector and tightener. It is high in bioflavonoids, which double as antioxidants and increase blood circulation. Thus, pomegranate oil will leave the skin tightened and smooth.
Carrier oils, also called base oils or vegetable oils, are also derived from plants, but mainly vegetables and seeds.
They are far less potent and concentrated, which is why they are used to dilute (lessen the concentration of) essential oils when needed. A few of the best base oils for use in tightening the skin include:
1. Olive oil:
Olive oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants like vitamin E. It tightens the skin by strengthening the muscle tissues and sealing the moisture into the skin. It slows down premature aging of the skin from photodamage.
2. Grapeseed oil:
One of the most widely used carrier oils for tightening the skin. Grapeseed oil contains high amounts of healthy fats and vitamin E, which boost hydration and collagen production.
3. Castor oil:
Castor oil is thickly saturated with fatty acids which are able to penetrate into the deeper layers of skin, making it a deep moisturizer. It renders the skin firmer and smoother because it promotes collagen synthesis and skin elasticity.
These are just some examples of all the oils that can give you firmer, more youthful skin. Another thing to remember is to look for pure, unadulterated, additive, fragrance, and synthetic-free oils, preferably organic. This will ensure you get the best results, without any harmful side effects.
