Charcoal Face Masks: Benefits and Downsides

Almost every season, the beauty industry finds a new beauty essential that no woman should live without. Thankfully, charcoal has made it into the rotation. After all, there are so many ways to benefit from the inclusion of charcoal in your beauty routine. Once you’ve learned more about the ways to use it and benefit from it, you might become obsessed with this natural product.

1. Hair

If you’d like to work on the health of your hair, it’s a great idea to include activated charcoal in your regimen. The amount of charcoal you use will be dependent upon how much hair you actually have. Once you’ve added a certain amount of charcoal to a bowl, you’ll want to add water to the mix. If you want to customize the mask, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the mix. Rosemary essential oil is a great option to consider. You can also opt to purchase a charcoal hair mask. Once you’ve applied the oil to your scalp and tresses, allow it to sit for a certain amount of time. Rinse thoroughly upon completion of the deep conditioning treatment.

2. Skin

You can also use activated charcoal on your skin. There are tons of companies who make charcoal masks. You can also make your own mask with activated charcoal. To make it more potent, add in an essential oil like tea tree oil. Before you apply the mask, it’s best to make sure your pores are open. Use steam to open up the pores. Then, apply the face mask and let it sit for a few minutes. Once you’ve used the mask, you might need to peel it off or use warm water to gently remove it from the skin. Always tone and moisturize the skin after you’ve used a charcoal mask as it can be very drying.

1. It unclogs pores.

If you have really oily skin, you understand the woes of sebum and clogged pores. Those clogged pores can lead to acne and a dull appearance. This is why it’s such a great idea to use activated charcoal. If you choose to use a charcoal peel off mask, when it’s time to remove the mask, you might be able to see the debris and sebum that the mask brings to the surface.

2. It decreases the oil production.

When you’re consistent with the use of a charcoal mask, your skin will absorb the elements of the charcoal. Charcoal absorbs oil really well. Even though charcoal can’t completely stop the oil production, it will help to get rid of the excess oil. Don’t use a charcoal cleanser or mask on a daily basis though. You don’t want to dry out your skin’s ability to produce oil.

3. It gets rid of toxins.

Charcoal is a known detoxifier. There are plenty of people who love to consume charcoal in pill form to detox their bodies. If you have toxins in your skin because of your environment or diet, the charcoal will pull those toxins out of your system. It’s that powerful.

4. It soothes the scalp.

Many people deal with scalp issues like dermatitis and dry scalp. This can lead to a lot of dandruff and scratching. Charcoal has a way of soothing an irritated scalp. You can choose to do the treatment before you wash your hair. Alternatively, you can choose to mix it in with your shampoo.

It doesn’t take long to reap the benefits of charcoal. However, it’s always great to be consistent with any product you use. With an intentional regimen and regular usage, you’ll sing the praises of activated charcoal in no time.
