When choosing a laundry detergent for your baby, whether he/she has eczema or not, you should read the list of ingredients to know what the soap does or does not contain. Before you choose your baby detergent for eczema make sure to read some of the specifics about laundry soap that we will discuss below.
As a disclaimer, while we do our best to make sure all info is accurate, check with your healthcare provider before attempting any new treatment.
How To Choose The Best Laundry Detergent For Your Baby
- You want a soap that is free of fragrance. Beware that unscented soap is not the same as fragrance-free detergent. Fragrance-free detergent has no fragrance in it at all but unscented means the fragrant ingredients in the soap have been covered up.
- You should also look for a soap that is plant-based and free of chemicals. Natural laundry soap can still cause your baby to break out or have eczema flares but it's not as likely if the detergent you are using isn't full of chemicals.
- You should choose a laundry detergent that doesn't have any brighteners in it. Brighteners are chemicals that make the colors of your baby's clothes look brighter. The brighteners don't clean the clothes any more than detergent without brighteners do and they will linger in the fibers of the clothing and can cause a reaction on your baby's skin.
- Look for a hypoallergenic detergent. It doesn't matter if you know whether or not your baby has allergies. A hypoallergenic soap is made by a manufacturer that claims that their soap won't cause as many allergic reactions as other detergents. Be aware that the FDA doesn't monitor the usage of the label hypoallergenic so there isn't any way of knowing for sure that it's the best soap for little ones who tend to have skin that is sensitive.
Best Baby Detergent for Eczema in Kids
All Free and Clear detergent isn't labeled as a baby laundry soap but it should be. The formula for this soap is hypoallergenic, and it is free of fragrance and dyes. All Free and Clear is gentle on the skin, primarily if your little person has eczema. This soap is the only laundry soap that the National Eczema Association backs for use by patients with the skin condition. The detergent may be gentle on the skin but it's tough on dirty clothes. If the clothes have got spots that may turn into hard to treat stains, you should still pretreat the mishaps.
Best Baby Laundry Soap For Stain Fighting
Seventh Generation Laundry detergent is 96% plant-based and has no brightener in it. The power-packed enzymes in the soap are non-toxic and biodegradable. Seventh Generation soap carries the label of hypoallergenic and is one of the best on the market to fight baby stains such as spit-up and first foods as well as diaper blow-outs. Some of the more gentle soaps can't get rid of nasty stains but Seventh Generation can knock out the worst of them. Even though this soap is not free of fragrance the scent comes from the essential oils that are plant-based along with botanical extracts. The EPA gave this soap the Safer Choice label.
These are two brands that are recommended by the National Eczema Association and the EPA, this does not mean there are no other soaps that are gentle on baby's skin. There are classics such as Dreft and others that you might consider using. It is a matter of personal preference and trial and error.
